SXSW 2015: Music Preview Guide

SXSW 2015: Music Preview Guide

There is now a Music Preview Guide available for this week’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The Independent Bloggers Guide to SXSW highlights 100 of their favorite bands prepared by over 25 independent music bloggers from over 2000 bands that are here this week.

Just click on the following link on whatever device you would like to install the document.

     SXSW 2015 Music Preview Guide

It is available in two formats – iBooks and PDF. There is an Artist Index which lists clickable artist names alphabetically with the corresponding page number, followed by a page for each artist with artist information, sample track, and related artists.

  • The iBooks version is downloaded when you click on the “iOS” link; the downloaded file can then be loaded into iBooks for either iOS on iPad or Mac OS X (but it is not supported on iPhone). You can click on the arrow button to listen to the sample track, and then flip to the next artist page; you can also use the Artist Index but the font is rather small and too easy to read.
  • The PDF version is downloaded when you click on the link for “Android or other devices”; this PDF document can be viewed but the song links will not be active so you would need to enter the artist’s name on the SXSW Schedule and listen to the track there. You can also just view this PDF on a Mac or PC if you like, but the links will not work.

See another music post for a similar top 100 list prepared by NPR Music that features an interactive web app.

The Austin 100: A SXSW 2015 Mix

The Austin 100: A SXSW 2015 Mix

Check out this article at NPR Music by Stephen Thompson. He has hand-picked 100 songs for artists appearing at South by Southwest Music Festival here in Austin this month. It includes the complete playlist with artist links and the ability to play each song, if you want to just browse through the list. However, I think you will like trying out their interactive web app (see below).

The Austin 100: A SXSW 2015 Mix

A really cool feature is a fully interactive multimedia web application. For each one, there is information about the artist and song, with hometown and brief description. There are links to download the MP3 song, stream that artist on Spotify or Rdio, or access iTunes or Amazon music stores

It offers shuffle play of all 100 songs, including the ability to pause, as well as skip forward or backward. You can click the heart to mark specific songs as a favorite, and you can later just click on a button to play your favorites. That makes it extremely easy to skim through all the songs and pick those that you like (and eliminate those you don’t).

Launch the The Austin 100 App by NPR Music.

Earlier there was a download available with all 100 MP3 songs as a single 795 MB zip file (over 6 hours of music), but that NPR download link is no longer active after SXSW. If you were lucky and downloaded it earlier, then you probably imported it into iTunes and made a playlist for it. However, the interactive web application on the “launch” link above still works and you can listen to all the songs.

Enjoy the music!
